Brain Anatomy

The brain is the most important organ in the body. Weighing just 3 pounds, this organ controls basically every bodily function. The brain recieves information about our surroundings through our 5 senses; visual, olfactory, gustation, and somatosensation. Our brains then assembles this information in a way that has meaning to us. Along with sensory information, the brain controls our thoughts, memory and speech, movement of the arms and legs, and the function of many organs within our body. To perform all of these functions, the brain needs to have a complex, specific structure and design.

  • The Frontal lobe - The frontal lobe is considered "control panel" of our ability to communicate and socialize. This part of the brain controls emotional expression, problem solving, memory, language, judgment, and sexual behaviors.
  • The Central Sulcus - Also known as "The Central Fold" or "The Central Fissure", this is a very important part of the central nervous system. It is very important that parts of the brain are folded like this to separate different parts of the brain that have functions independent of eachother.
  • The Parietal lobe - This lobe is positioned near the back, just before the occipital lobe. This part of the brain and is divided into two hemispheres. This lobe has the main purpose of functioning and processing sensory information, as well as interpreting language information, and processing mathematics.
  • The Occipital lobe - This lobe is located at the very back of the brain, and is the main processing center for visual stimuli and information.
  • The Sylvian Fissure - Also known as the "Lateral Sulcus" is a large sulcus that separates the frontal and parietal lobes from the temporal lobe. These fissures are important for keeping the different parts of the brain separate.
  • The Temporal Lobe - This area of the brain processes sound, auditory language and speech comprehension. The auditory cortex is located within this part of the brain and the sylvian fissure.
  • The Cerebellum - This is a major part of the brain located in the back and lower portion of the brain, just above the brain stem. This part of the brain mainly controls motor skills such as balance, coordination, and posture.
